                    Welcome
The Coatings Training Institute brought to you by the British Coatings Federation, is suitable for anyone who needs to know more about the technology of coatings. This means not just those people involved directly in coatings formulation and manufacture but also people right across the supply chain, including suppliers to the industry, users of coatings products or who work in a related industry.
Level 1 of this exciting programme of study provides a pathway for anyone who wishes or needs to develop an understanding of the technology of surface coatings. This includes sales, administrative or technical support staff who deal first-hand with users. The training could also assist staff involved in the application and testing of coating products.
Level 1
Level 1 is comprised of modules covering the following topics:
- Pigments Colour and Dispersion
- Evaluation and Specifications
- Formulation – Determining Factors
- System Components – Decorative Applications
- Formulation Requirements of Industrial Systems – Automotive and Packaging Applications
- Formulation Requirements of Industrial Systems Wood and High Performance Coatings
- Liquid Coating, Modifiers and Drying
- Application and Special Properties
- Appearance and Properties
- Urethane and Amino Resins *
- Epoxy, Acrylic and Water Reducible Resins *
- Water Borne Coatings *
- Thermosetting Coating Powders *
- Coating Powders – Manufacture
- Thin Film Intumescent Coatings for Fire Protection of Steel
- General Overview of Inkjet
- Advanced Level Formulation Project
Students work through modules by downloading the coursework material from our Study Portal. Students also complete online assessments and written tests at the end of the modules which are marked by a Coatings Training Institute tutor, who is appointed when studies commence. Total study time per module is between 8–12 hours. All instructions and learning plans are contained at the beginning of the module. Each student is given a personal web page where they can track their progress.
Successful completion of 6 modules entitles a student to a full International Certificate in Coatings Technology (ICCT) awarded by The Coatings Training Institute.
These modules include references to scientific concepts relating to coatings technology. For example, those identified with an asterisk contain many references to chemical formulae and reactions. Therefore, a scientific education, with Chemistry and Physics to at least UK Advanced Level or higher, is strongly recommended for anyone taking these modules.
